Join us for a practical habitat restoration session in the beautiful setting of Greenlands Mire, where the Dorset Peat Partnership carried out wetland restoration works last winter to help restore this important peatland habitat.

This hands-on session includes two main tasks:

  • Reshaping earth contour bunds using hand tools to improve their profiles

  • Installing dams made from baled heather to strengthen areas damaged by winter storms

With guidance from National Trust Wetland Officer Gen Crisford, we’ll work together as a coordinated team to make the day both productive and rewarding.

The mire is a gorgeous wetland habitat where you may spot sphagnum mosses, dragonflies & emerging spring flora. And we'll also help keep your energy levels up with plenty of snacks 😋

Highlights

  • Practical action to help restore Greenlands Mire

  • Guided by National Trust Wetland Officer Gen Crisford

  • Real conservation work with visible local impact

  • A chance to explore a beautiful wetland habitat

  • Mud, teamwork & fresh air included!

Why come?

Because you’ll:

  • Spend a rewarding day outdoors

  • Play a direct part in local nature recovery

  • Learn more about peatlands and why they matter

Why it matters

Better bunds can help slow water movement, support mosses, encourage peat-forming conditions, store more carbon and create pools for wildlife 🩵

Important info

Bring your own water bottle / flask to stay hydrated

Bring a packed lunch & we'll provide plenty of other snacks as well

Tools will be supplied by the National Trust Purbeck team

Please wear old, suitable clothing as you will definitely get muddy

Wellies are strongly recommended because you'll be in a bog!

There is a short walk of around a mile from the parking area to the site

The work area is off-road, with uneven ground & standing water

Participants will need to be physically able to use a shovel or similar hand tools

There are no facilities on site = not a caramel lattes in sight!

The nearest toilets are at Knoll Beach or Shell Bay

Who can attend?

This event is mainly recommended for adults, given the nature of the site and tasks. Families are very welcome, but children must be supervised at all times - we have positive work to do people! 💪⛏
