Looking (very!) closely at mosses!

Art and Energy are excited to share the first results from our project with Plymouth Electron Microscopy Centre at the University of Plymouth. Our six moss samples were frozen with liquid nitrogen and then coated with a substance containing gold (immunogold labelling) then they were ready for photographing using the JEOL electron microscope. The moss samples came from a range of locations on Dartmoor, Plymbridge woods near Plymouth plus one sample of a moss growing in a drain pipe.

Art and Energy’s Jenny and Cat spent a fascinating day in PEMC viewing the moss samples and trying to capture the ‘wow’ factor in the images below.

The full selection of electron microscope images can be viewed via Dropbox here.
