Following on from the success of our online Wool and Energy gathering, Art and Energy recently delivered an in-person wool and fleece workshop in partnership with Plymouth Energy Community and our PEC Pals Warm and Well project.

We brought the PEC Pals volunteers together with two different creative artists who use wool and fleece in their creative practice. Firstly, Catherine West from Significant Seams CIC who shared her knowledge of wool and spinning and secondly with Mary Toon from Mary Felt Amazing, a Plymouth based felting artist.

The workshop was hosted by the Sustainable Earth Institute at the University of Plymouth and the space allowed us to talk wool and creativity plus set up a huge ‘making table’ where everyone could try out various techniques for using wool and fleece to make creative items. We were really grateful for donated offcuts of local fleece from Yuli Somme at Bellacouche.

The PEC Pals project hopes to create useful items from waste wool and fleece which can help people living in fuel poverty across Plymouth for example draught excluders, letter box covers, sleeping mats, insulation, jumpers, slippers, blankets and crafts.

We thoroughly enjoyed bringing such a wonderful group of people together and inspiring such a diverse range of creativity. Thank you to Catherine and Mary for joining us and sharing their knowledge.

Watch this space for further updates on our plans to work with wool and fleece.

Have you been creative with wool, felt or fleece? We’d love to see! Why not share your creations on our new Bury the Giant Club and join a community of like minded people inspiring for a brighter greener future.

It was such a joy being creative and learning the skills of spinning and neddle felting. I was lost in my own world

Lovely time chatting with people who are excited about making things to help others & learning about how to maximise the potential of wool.
