Peaty stories, conversations and sounds: listen to our series of Bogcasts

Art and Energy have captured the voices of people of all ages and from all walks of life to bring you a series of Bogcasts for Peat-Fest South-West. A series of seven bogcasts (podcasts) sharing our joint love of peatlands and highlighting key voices involved in protecting these precious landscapes from across the South West who share their experiences and learning.

Finally, in our seventh and final bogcast, we bring together the young people involved in the project, drawing their voices together to share the peatlands Manifesto.

We hope these Bogcasts form a lasting legacy of our Peat-Fest South-West journey that was funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Each Bogcast has a different peatlands theme for you to enjoy:

  1. Beginnings: Gives an idea of the many different voices involved in this celebration of peatlands, asks ‘what is peat?’, and encourages curiosity as to why peat is so special and how it reduces the impact of climate change.

  2. Wet Land: Explores the wettest and flattest areas in the Southwest, the Somerset Levels with the Avalon Marshes team.

  3. Buried: Discover the worlds contained in peat and how peatlands can store huge amounts of carbon, preserve ancient life forms, and sustain current ones.

  4. Life Force: Listen to voices that have fought for change and taken action against the climate crisis.

  5. Stomping Ground: Explores the way that stories, songs and celebration can connect us to our land.

  6. Small Giants: Looks at the climate crisis and our role and responsibilities as small but significant parts of our planet’s history.

  7. Cycles of Life: Celebrates the young people’s voices from around the South West, brought together as their Manifesto.

Our Bogcasts are available to listen to free of charge on any of these platforms Spotify, SoundCloud, YouTube podcasts, Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts or listen directly on our website via the links below.

We often look up to the stars for answers, but we are suggesting you might look down for a change. We are handing you a terrestrial telescope and inviting you to go ground gazing with us. What do you see?

Cropped plants, ink spots of water, open mounds of tufted earth. Dive deeper, there is a world beneath, a festival of exchange, a body that brings balance. Peatlands are rich constellations where we can discover ancient histories, cultural heritage and essential ecosystems. Their wisdom can help us to learn more about the world we live in and how to make it a better place together.

Our thanks to Matilda Wright, Art and Energy Associate and the RE-PEAT team, including Rachael Milliner and Femi Oriogun-Williams for their work on these Bogcasts.
